Straight Time: Hoffman knocks heads with greasy parole officer Walsh following his discharge from penitentiary and starts a downward skid. An immersing if not specifically differentiated melodrama that gets a genuine shot in the arm from tremendous acting by the supporting cast. Cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Theresa Russell, Harry Dean Stanton, Gary Busey, Emmet Walsh, and Rita Taggart. (114 minutes, 1978)
King and 4 Queens: Static misfire with Gable on the run he stole from the men of 4 females he confronts. Cast includes Clark Gable, Eleanor Parker, Jo Van Fleet, Jean Wiles, Barbara Nichols, Sara Shane, and Jay C. Flip. (86 minutes, 1956)
Dangerous Liaisons: Set in the 1760’s, a wager has been made. Cecile de Volanges, a virtuous woman, is soon to be married. The Marquise de Merteuil bets an ex-lover, Viconte de Valmont, that he can’t seduce her before the wedding day. Who will win the ugly little bet?
The Last Samurai: This is a true epic story of a lost soldier who winds up fighting a war in a far away land. Hired by the emperor of Japan to train his army, he is quickly captured by the Samurai he was training the army to defeat. Living amongst these great people he comes to believe in the way of the Samurai. He winds up fighting on their side, with all of his heart.
Noel: Ambitious tear jerker in regards to the interactions of scared, susceptible buddies, lovers, colleagues, and outsiders on Christmas Eve. A lonely novel editor (Sarandon) whose mom suffers from Alzheimer’s, a cop Stroller whose unreasonable jealousy is restraining his fiance Cruz, and a heartbroken waiter Arkin with a odd rebirth fantasy. Gets better as it goes along, it zeros in on issues of acceptance and reconciliation. Trader Horn: Early talkie classic filmed largely in Michigan forests still retains lots of enthusiasm in story of hero local trader Carey confronting tribal violence.
